We work from Narsarsuaq — a small settlement deep in the South Greenlandic fjords, founded as a US air base during WWII (Bluie West One). Fewer than 50 residents. Agroprojekt Ilua is, to our knowledge, the primary private development initiative on site.

Narsarsuaq valley and settlement context

A unique microclimate

A rare Arctic-boreal transition zone.

The Narsarsuaq valley is sheltered by the fjord topography, with markedly milder temperatures than the regional norm.

Narsarsuaq Arboretum — established in 1954 — documents 70 years of plant growth and is the best-documented plant trial in an Arctic context. Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) planted in the 1950s continues to grow here.

~1150 GDD (base 5°C) annually, DMI normal period 1991–2020. For reference: Copenhagen ~1800 GDD; Ilulissat (68°N) ~400 GDD.

Climate research

The site case is based on measured climate logic, not atmosphere.

The Field Base work uses Narsarsuaq-specific climate analysis from the Ilua Sunyard research track: sun path, solar height, monthly irradiation, temperature profile, wind, precipitation and slope/shadow constraints.

A settlement in transition

A strategic inflection point for Narsarsuaq.

Narsarsuaq airport closed permanently on 15 April 2026. The settlement sits at a strategic inflection point. The location offers infrastructure and a development potential for Arctic agricultural technology that few other places in Greenland can match — a microcosm for the rest of Greenland and the Arctic.

The area also offers a rare testbed for Arctic technology under real conditions: wind, cold, snow, polar weather.

The land

6 hectares, south-facing.

An application has been filed for 6 ha on a south-facing slope in the upper valley — sun-oriented, sheltered from northerly winds, naturally drained, free of conflict with existing use.

Agroprojekt Ilua is the primary private development initiative in Narsarsuaq — a long-term commitment to building local food production capacity in a settlement that needs new, locally rooted economic activity.

Founder Julian Sonne has been on-site full-time since 10 April 2026. Field work is underway. Preliminary investigation, land application (6 ha) and authority dialogue are in progress.

The three technical tracks are developed in parallel and independently. Full physical integration into a single facility comes later, once each track is technically mature.
