Narsarsuaq is the field base.
Narsarsuaq means the Great Plain in Kalaallisut. It lies deep inside Tunulliarfik Fjord in South Greenland, where a broad valley stretches from the river mouth and into the interior.
Here, Ilua can make the Arctic agriculture question measurable in a real settlement context. Roads, harbour, flat land and technical systems are already here.
Narsarsuaq gives Ilua a concrete field base, not a finished answer. The valley has documented plant growth, real Arctic pressure and a local economy in transition. Field Base is where the work can measure, grow trial crops and let evidence decide the scale.

A valley of microclimates
A real site with real design conditions.
The Narsarsuaq valley is formally sub-Arctic, but regional labels are too blunt for this place. The important task is practical: greenhouse design, protected field cultivation and documented operating methods must be made measurable on the ground.
It is not an easy place. Foehn, snow drift, winter cold and a 44 m/s wind-load baseline shape every greenhouse and crop-zone decision. Those conditions make the work honest: useful local production has to prove what scale the valley can realistically carry.
Narsarsuaq Arboretum — established in 1954 — documents 70 years of plant growth in an Arctic context. Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) planted in the 1950s continues to grow here, and favourable microsites show why the valley matters.
Climate normals and seasonal profiles are used to guide design assumptions. Public claims are kept tied to validated field evidence.

The Field Base work draws from the Narsarsuaq scientific review and Narsarsuaq-specific climate analysis from the Ilua Sunyard track: sun path, solar height, monthly irradiation, temperature profile, wind, precipitation and slope/shadow constraints as technical basis for design and operation.

A settlement in transition
Why transition makes this site decision urgent.
Narsarsuaq airport closed permanently on 15 April 2026. The settlement now needs new work that belongs to the place.
Ilua's ambition is concrete: a working greenhouse and protected growing site that can test how much more Arctic agriculture can be developed locally.
That is why the site matters. A practical Arctic agriculture question, settlement transition and Arctic design conditions meet here: infrastructure, winter cold, snow, wind, logistics and the need for useful local agriculture systems.
The land
6 hectares, south-facing.
An application has been filed for 6 ha on a south-facing slope in the upper valley — sun-oriented, sheltered from northerly winds, naturally drained, with no known conflict with existing use.

Agroprojekt Ilua is a long-term commitment to making the valley's documented potential measurable as working local Arctic agriculture. Narsarsuaq combines documented botanical potential with real Arctic constraints — and that combination is what makes it useful as a field base and first reference site.
Founder Julian Sonne has been on-site full-time since 10 April 2026. Field work is underway. Preliminary investigation, land application (6 ha) and authority dialogue are in progress.
The connected technical tracks are developed in parallel. Full physical integration into a production facility comes later, once each track is technically mature enough to inform the first prototype.
