About

A long-term project for Arctic agriculture.

Agroprojekt Ilua develops Arctic agricultural infrastructure: greenhouse systems, microclimate solutions, passive energy systems and documented growing methods.

We prototype and test in Narsarsuaq, South Greenland, and publish everything open-source. The work scales gradually toward a commercial facility supplying a substantial share of the Greenlandic market for fresh produce — and toward replicable infrastructure for the rest of the Arctic.

The founder

Julian H. Sonne

Hi, I’m Julian — an entrepreneur with a background in landscape architecture, computer science, event- and project management, and creative problemsolving.

In April 2026, I decided to change my life. I moved to Narsarsuaq, a settlement of fewer than 50 people in a valley deep in the fjords of South Greenland.

The airport was just about to close permanently. Most people were leaving. But I came to stay. Crazy as that might be.

I came because this valley — with its sheltered microclimate, its 70-year-old arboretum, its unique settings and possibilities, and its deep agricultural history going back to the Norse settlers — is the best place in Greenland to answer a simple question: can we grow fresh fresh produce in the Arctic, reliably, affordably, quantifiably, and in a way that anyone can replicate?

That question matters.

More than 90% of fresh produce consumed in Greenland is imported.

The cost is high, the supply is fragile, the climate footprint large, supply chains long and fragile, and the nutritional consequences are real.

This is not unique to Greenland — it is the condition of every Arctic community on Earth.

Ilua is my humble attempt at an answer. Built openly, tested publicly, published for anyone to use. I do my research, I work hard, and I hope to develop solutions that can bolster the food security of a fragile region.

If it works here, it can work anywhere in the Arctic.

Phase 1 is underway. I am on-site now. I work without a salary — your support is what keeps this going.

The company

Anchored in two entities, one mission

The project is anchored in Ilua ApS (Danish parent, CVR 45239876) with Agroprojekt Ilua ApS as the planned operative subsidiary under Greenlandic law (in formation, expected Q3 2026, registered in Narsarsuaq).

Public support flows through the parent until the subsidiary is incorporated and its company number is issued.

About half of the current development budget is committed in principle through institutional co-financing (formal agreements being completed; investors not named publicly at this stage). The other half is the crowdfunding goal. Crowdfunding continues while field work and development are underway; every dollar raised above the immediate runway goes directly into the next round of site work, engineering and open documentation.

Engineering partner for Arctic Ilua: specialist engineering partner — formal agreement being completed; announcement on signature.

The plan

A multi-year programme, in three layers

Ilua is designed as a multi-year development programme with three layers, built in sequence. The first underwrites the second; the second funds the third. Detailed financial projections are available to institutional partners on request.

01

A working market garden in Narsarsuaq

A commercial Arctic agricultural enterprise scaled gradually from a small test module toward a full production facility. Positive operating result targeted in the medium term. Detailed CAPEX and revenue trajectories are shared with institutional partners.

02

Consulting and engineering for Arctic communities internationally

The technical experience, climate data and documentation we build is unusually detailed for the latitude. It can be turned into paid consulting for actors in Iceland, Alaska, northern Canada and Svalbard who want to establish similar production without starting from zero.

03

A replication model so the design can be built elsewhere

The long-term goal: Ilua designs, delivers and certifies the complete production system; a local partner runs the facility and sells locally. Ilua provides the system and the knowledge base. The partner runs the business.
