Crop choice is part of the technology.

Ilua Crop Programme develops a crop strategy for Arctic agriculture: species, varieties, growing seasons, energy demand, market value and operating routines are treated as one design problem.

The goal is not to force energy-heavy crops through the system year-round. The goal is to match crops to Narsarsuaq's light, climate, microclimate, energy model and commercial reality.

Why crop strategy matters

Not every crop belongs in the same Arctic system.

Crops differ in light demand, temperature needs, growing time, harvest window, labour requirements, storage life, market value and need for supplementary energy.

In Arctic agriculture, crop choice is therefore not a secondary operating decision. It is part of the technical, energy and commercial design of the whole production model.

Greenhouse programme

Greenhouse crops must fit the operating envelope.

The greenhouse crop programme will be developed around available light, season length, temperature control, energy cost, crop cycle, yield, quality and market demand.

Some crops may fit the high-light growing season. Others may only make sense with limited season extension. Some may not be realistic until energy, storage or operating conditions improve.

Field and outdoor crops

Field crops build on South Greenland's growing experience.

Outdoor and protected field crops will build on existing South Greenlandic cultivation experience, historical trials and practical knowledge from places such as Upernaviarsuk.

Ilua will adapt this knowledge to Narsarsuaq through crop validation, soil work, microclimate design, sowing windows, harvest timing, quality assessment and local market testing.

Decision logic

Crops are selected by system fit.

Ilua evaluates crops by light demand, temperature range, cultivation time, robustness, yield potential, labour needs, harvest window, market value, storage qualities and need for supplementary energy.

The crop programme will change as measurements, trials, customer demand and operating data improve. That is part of the model.
